The EP Group has made a significant stride towards sustainability by ceasing operations at five major coal-fired power units. This move aligns with our commitment to a coal-free future and marks a substantial reduction in our carbon footprint.
During March the two remaining units of the Vojany power plant in Slovakia, the German hard coal power plant Mehrum and the German lignite power plants Jänschwalde E and F ceased operations. In total, these closures represent a reduction of 1910 MW in installed capacity. This follows the previous year’s closure of the Slovak lignite power plant Nováky and the coal-fired power plant Kilroot in Northern Ireland.

This action underscores the group’s dedication to transitioning towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly electricity production.
In Germany alone, the EPH and EP Energy Transition groups plan to develop renewable energy projects with a total installed capacity exceeding 8,000 MW by 2030. This initiative includes replacing existing critical grid production capacities with high-efficiency natural gas-fired power plants capable of burning hydrogen and other renewable gases.

The EP Group’s recent plant closures highlight our ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing overall environmental impact. By focusing on developing new low or zero-emission production sources, the company is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future in energy production.
